Paid mold-remediation contractors and individual remediators must register with IDPH, unless exempt.

  2. 02

    Insurance

Contractors must document required liability and workers’ compensation coverage, plus mold-specific pollution coverage or an environmental rider of at least $500,000 per occurrence.

Exempt employees must be directly supervised by a registered, non-exempt employee who has at least one year of field experience, physically present onsite.

  4. 04

    Certification

Accepted credentials include IICRC MRS, IICRC AMRT and NORMI CMI. Existing practitioners have until September 30, 2027 to obtain certification. They must submit a registration form and meet all other applicable requirements.

    Renewal

Registrations expire September 30 of odd-numbered years. Submit renewal at least 30 days before expiration.

Before hiring

Ask for registration, credentials and insurance documentation.

That is the whole of the advice, and it is the part that protects you. Three documents, asked for before anyone starts.

  • Their IDPH registration.
  • The credentials of the people doing the work.
  • Their insurance documentation, including the mold-specific cover.

Summary only. Exemptions apply; consult the full rule. This is general information and not legal advice.
